7. Fifteen Minutes in the Bathroom

6:30 p.m.

The restroom floor tiles were arranged in alternating rows of bright orange and blue, in imitation of the Dominion flag. Nero wasn’t a designer, but his instincts told him that the pre-war red and white had made for more inspiring, if tackier, displays of patriotism. That said, he didn’t care what color the tiles were as long as they were clean. He could tolerate a dirty bathroom at home, but stepping through someone else’s filth was bad for his mood.

After checking the time, he entered the first empty stall on the left. He planned on spending three minutes there at most. Anything more would be testing the patience of a woman with a license for unprovoked murder. After taking a seat and double-checking the toilet paper, he tabbed over to his messages. Two unread messages were waiting. He started with Avery, praying that nothing else in their apartment had been kicked down or confiscated.

Hey Nero,

I know you’re still on your ‘avoid discussing any and all feelings’ grind, but I wanted to thank you for saving my ass earlier. Sometimes it’s easy to get so wrapped up in changing my environment that I forget I’m in it. I mean, most people spend too much time worrying about themselves, but I should indulge a little.
